Brewmaster
Based on the Alchemist from Brighter Worlds
Power: Through experimentation or study, you’ve developed recipes for powerful Elixirs, imbued with your own Aether. Your Recipes determine the effect and cost of your Elixirs; start with two of them (created with the procedure below).
When you brew an Elixir, you may reduce its cost by taking more time. Consult the Time Magnitude for the reduction (e.g. spending half an hour brewing reduces the cost by 2). Brewing a vial of a potion on the fly requires 1 slot’s worth of reagants, and produces 1 vial. With proper tools or a workshop, 1 slot’s worth of ingredients produces 3 vials.
You may hold 3 Vials of one Elixir in an inventory slot. At the start of each situation, you may have up to 3 of any of your Elixirs prepared.
Whenever you would have the opportunity to create a new Technique, you may instead create a new Recipe if you choose.
Creating Recipes
The base cost for a recipe is 1 Aether.
When creating a Recipe, first decide what kind of effect your Elixir will have:
- Amplify: Boost some characteristic or ability (e.g. instantly commit something to memory, enhance speed or strength, see in the dark)
- Poison: Harm a creature in some way (e.g. enter a deep sleep, see terrible visions, die)
- Reaction: Interact with a target substance in a particular way (e.g. burn through wood, smoke when exposed to leather, give off bright light when mixed with sand)
Come to an agreement with the Referee on the Aether cost of your effect, using the Quality Magnitude.
Add cost equal to the effective length of a dose, using the Time magnitude.
If relevant, decide how the Elixir is applied:
- Imbibed: The target must consume the elixir (-2 Cost)
- Topical: The elixir may be applied to the target’s surface or skin (-1 Cost)
- Aerated: The elixir may take effect as droplets or vapor
Add any downsides to reduce the cost:
- The Elixir is unstable and a doses will expire soon after brewing. (Use 4 - Time factor, e.g. 1 reduction for doses that last hours and 4 reduction for doses that last seconds)
- The potion requires 2 Supply (from your ship or purchased locally) of standard ingredients, rather than your usual reagents. (-2 Cost)
- When brewing the Elixir, there is a 1-in-6 chance the batch is ruined. (-2 Cost)
- There is a side effect; negotiate the cost with the Referee
Upgrades
- Just the thing: You may concoct a new Elixir on the spot. Follow the recipe creation rules
- Dungeon Meal: Using components of a monster in your brewing allows you to impart its unique abilities into an Elixir.
- Instant powder: You may render your Elixirs into a nearly-complete form, allowing five of them to be brewed at once and carried in a single inventory slot. It takes a few minutes of uninterrupted time to turn this form into the final product.
